Top Setters
Let's see who the top setters are. Please remember that setting is more than just throwing the ball up high in the air. Good setters should be able to turn bad passes into a good set, turn good passes into perfect sets with optional attacks, and make average hitters look good. Good setters also knows what it takes to win the game. I have seen mostly AAA schools and do not know names so my list of teams with very good setters that caught my attention this season, in no particular order, are the following:
Greenbrier East - quick, accurate, and has a sneaky dump shot
Musselman - although she has one of the best hitters to help her look good she can still hold her own
Spring Valley - accurate quicks in the middle and spreads the ball around
Winfield - accurate slides, quicks, and jump sets tight passes
GW - quick and accurate but does not have the hitters to help her
Capital - tall, accurate, good hands but gets no help from her team
I have heard that Ripley has a good setter but have not seen her play
top setters
i understand but what is one more game and still you can not tell me that was a bad performance. she has been a starter since she was a freshman. i think she deserves a spot in the top setters of the state.
best setters
everyone should look at prestons miranda peddicord in reginols she had and very shocking 74 assists. and paula renteria had 38 kills in reginols. you tell me what other pair puts up numbers like that....
Here is a section of a story
In response to phs1992's question.
Here is a section of a story from the Parkersburg News on Region IV Regionals:
Molly Kirkland had about 30 kills. For the day, PHS senior captain Lauren Draber contributed 166 sets, including 67 assists. Sarah Thompson had 25 points and 32 spikes with 13 kills, and freshman Kayla Lowers had 60 spikes with 22 kills and Renee Cox 31 spikes with 15 kills.
Lexy Kessel paced the Vikings on the day with 44 points and 38 kills in their two matches, while Alannah Sheets netted a combined 27 points and 29 assists, and Brittani Brooks added 21 points and Lindsey Layhew 37 assists.
Each team only played 6 total games, whereas Preston had to play at least 7 (3-1 vs East Fairmont, not sure of semifinal score).
I would have to choose Johns
I would have to choose Johns from Musselman..she has shown her stuff this season, from being in the shadows of by far the best setter in the state last year (Chelsea Wheaton) to getting over that 1,000 assists hump..which is no easy task, but having hitters like Manor and Nicewarner to back you up can tend to make the task a little easier! If i remember correctly Johns did not set at all last year, so kudos too her!!!!
Top Setter in the State
Draber from Parkersburg has stats that far exceed all the names mentioned on this post. As of last Saturday's Regional win, her 2008 numbers are 3371 sets, 1279 Assists and an average 9.1 assist per game. I'd say she gets the honors.
Top Setter in the state
Actually based off of your numbers I would say the opposite. Draber has 1280 assists at 9.1 assists per game- that works out to 140 games played. Johns has 1101 assists at 9.9 assists per game- that works out to 112 games played. That is a 28 game difference. If you project Johns's stats out for 28 more games at 9.9 assists per game then she is close to 1400. This is why the assists per game is an important state as it is a measure of the efficiency of the setter.
I think the only way to
I think the only way to really determine a good setter is to watch and compare her to other setters that you have seen. Stats are useful for certain things when coaching a team but I question the validity when using them to determine quality of a player. For example it is possible to have the best setter in the country on a team with the worst hitters which means her assists will be meaningless. How does knowing how many times a girl has set the ball in her career or just because she has started since her freshman year determine quality? All that tells me is that she got a lot of playing time. It does not tell me how good a player is. What if every player on the team sucked? What if the second best setter in the country only got to start her senior year because she was overshadowed until the best setter in the country graduated which in turn made the number 2 into number 1?. Since there is not a "how to take statistics standard" different people record statistics differently which makes comparing "girl 1 on team 1" to "girl 2 on team 2" accurately impossible. AND if your team is like most you either have a biased parent, an uncaring bench player, or non-observant student taking stats. What if I said I know a setter who averages 20 assists/game, 4,000 assists/season, 250 aces/season, 20 digs/game, and 5,000 career kills. Improbable? Yes. Impossible? No. Can you challenge my stats? Yes. Will you win the challenge? Nope, because I have it all on paper. The first thing a college recruiter will say after you send them a spreadsheet full of statistics is "Thanks, but, just send me a short video of her playing"
assists and sets
Yes, that's what I'm saying. Koper sets the ball from anywhere on the court, it doesn't matter where they pass the ball. That's how her totals are so high.
Career Sets
I have seen a couple posters using a stat called career sets, this is not a stat I have seen used before. What significance does this have versus an actual assist?
sets vs. assists
A set and an assist is the same thing. It's when you place the ball for another teammate to spike it into the opponents court. There is no difference.
a set and an assist are not
a set and an assist are not the same. A set is when you pass a ball for a player to attack, an assist is when that attack equals a kill. Maxpreps offers definitions for each stat.
sets versus assist
So are they saying that someone has 2800 assists this year???? Or 9000 assists for a career?? The numbers seem way out of line if you look at assist totals for the others in the state.
a set is when the ball is put
a set is when the ball is put up and an attack is made.
an assist is when the set when a kill is made.
example. Suzie has 45 sets for 22 assists. there were 45 attacks, but only 22 of the balls were killed
A set is when the ball is put
Thank you MSACFAN, that definition makes sense. I will stay with the actual assist stat since that actually results in a point being scored.
Top AA Setter
Kayla Matics, Senior, Ravenswood, is top-notch. A four-year varsity starter with over 3,500 career sets and well over 1,000 points.
Def top 10 in AA
Oak Glen's Taylor Koper is a senior, with over 9,000 career sets and 900 points. This year so far she has 2,830 sets with a 91% serving accuracy.
Top Setters
Oak Glen has the best setter I've seen. She is quick, makes unbelievable saves and is extremely accurate. She can place the ball anywhere she wants from anywhere on the court. I have never seen a setter as aggressive or play the net as well as her. This team is so much fun to watch! I'm sure they will make it to the #1 spot in the state tourney.
the girl from ripley
yeah watched her alot at the msacs this weekend great setter but also blocks(takes above average hitters out of the game) digs, and spikes with some of the best in the state not sure why early they had her and their main hitter in a rotation where neither could hit for one full round but it cost them big without the setter or hitter eoither one in the lineup ripley goes from a great team to an average at best team!
saw alot out of parkersburgs setter also I was impressed and the msac by far hosts 95% of the best teams in the state
Devan Ellison from Wirt
Devan Ellison from Wirt County has some great hands. She doesn't have many weapons to go to, other than Sam Kelley and her sister Megan.
Philip Barbour
Philip Barbour's setter is a sophomore, Sarah McCauley, has 841 assists and is leading her team with 204 service points.
She also ran in the state cross country meet today and earned all-state honors finishing in third.
I agree that the setter from
I agree that the setter from musselman is a good setter even though she has a good hitter to fall back on. She sets all the hitters well from my perspective.

Top Setters
Come on folks let's fill in the blanks.
Top Setters
WVMTNBIKER, I agree with your thoughts on this. I have seen all these kids play this year multiple times except for the girl from Spring Valley. The state tournament should be a great venue for all of these girls and their teams.
Ripley has a good setter #7,
Ripley has a good setter #7, not sure of name....She can turn tight passes into good sets, very accurate, and can dump very well against blockers because she is so tall.
Other good setters I have seen include:
Phillip Barbour, Winfield, Parkersburg, Spring Valley & Cabell Midland
