I want to know what people thing about the pre season rankings and the current rankings. I want to know how a team can not participate in AAA tournaments and play lower Class teams and be ranked in the top 10
I am relatively new to this forum and am unclear as to how the rankings are determined? Who votes...coaches...refs...newspapers...zealous parents? One reason I ask is how can Mussleman remain #2 in AAA when beaten soundly this weekend by AA Frankfort, then losing again later the same day?

Any type of ranking that is tabulated from "fan votes" is going to be suspect.
Bridgeport is 20-6 on the season and swept Parkersburg South tonight but they never get any mention because they play in what is perceived by most as a weak area for AAA and they don't play 40 games a year because of conference obligations. Plus, they have to face Hedgesville/Musselman/Martinsburg in their region each year to advance.
Coaches will tell you that to be fair they can only vote on who they see, same with refs.
Most newspapers don't have the manpower anymore to cover an all-day tournament, most do good to have one guy that sees all the local teams play with soccer, cross country, football and golf going on at the same time of year as well as local college sports.
I doubt if there will ever be a poll that satisfies all of us.

I've seen some Class A and Class AA teams over the years that could play with just about anyone. Just because a team is in Class AAA, it doesn't automatically make them world beaters. Wirt County and Oak Glen are just two examples of great programs - year-in and year-out - that are lower classification programs.

Oak Glen and Wirt have good programs and they can play with any AAA team in the state. Oak Glen could have been a top 5 AAA team last year. I know that some teams to not participate in tournaments. So they do not get a chance to play top teams in their class. They schedule tri-matches with teams that have just started volleyball programs so they can have high rankings when sectional and regional roll around. I think the rankings should go by win-loss in sectionl first.

Why are there no rankings this week (9/23)?
