Classless fans
Observing at the Cabel Midland Tournament Sat Sep 19th, I was appalled at the rude fans from Spring Valley. Every match they boo-d their opponents. Does that really prove your team is better? No. It just proves the fans are classless! Can't fans get yellow cards that are given to the team coach? Sure, SV is a good team, but stop acting like morons!
what idiots
i was sitting behing parkersburgs bench when their coach turned around and told the students that they were not allowed to boo at a game. they were not booing there team, they were booing a call that was made but right before that the coach for p-burg was already crying about the same call. he had no right telling students they couldn't react in that way. when he cried the whole time his girls played sp. valley. for someone to call us classess, get real and face the fact sp. valley played harder and deserved to win the tournament.
intimidating refs
Not only did Bobby Knight try this technique of intimidating refs. Dean Smith and John Woodson did it also. It is called gaining credit. You can make a ref look for someting the opposing team is doing wrong. Dean Smith did it by not raising his voice and Bobby Knight did yelling and screaming. The way a coach approaches it might be different but they are trying to gain the same thing.
good coaching
Sometimes a good coach will try and intimidate refs. That is just good coaching. If I don't get this call he will think about it the next time. This is what happens in every sport. I don't think the coach from PHS is wrong for questioning calls refs make. That is part of the job. I said it earlier that I think the fans that come to volleyball matches are parents and I have not encountered anything ugly. I have felt welcomed from all the parents from apposing teams. I think SV has good team and everybody is trying to take them down. I am not from SV, but they should be ranked #1. Who won the Midland tournament?
agree
I agree with you on both points. I have not seen SV play this year but based on the results from last weeks tournament I can't understand last weeks rankings. The only thing I can think of is that considering no one posted the scores from Parkersburgs tournament on WVRSN, maybe the editor was not aware that SV beat PHS. Will someone please give us some results from the Cabell Midland tournament??
Cabell Midland Results
Spring Valley won the Cabell Midland tournament. They defeated Parkersburg 2-1 in the semifinals. Then they defeated Greenbriar East 2-0 in the finals.
tournament
BTW what was the outcome of the tournament (playoff matchups etc.)?? Im certainly not from PHS but Coach Harnish is an outstanding coach and his record obviously speaks for itself. He does try and intimidate the officials and sometimes opposing coaches. I don't blame him because the officials let him get away with it and more times than not they give PHS the benefit of the doubt on close calls. Although sometimes crossing the line, Carls intensity works for him, its amazing how he can get consistently good play out of often times average players. He reminds me of a famous coach that won a few national championships for Indiana!
Carl has done an outstanding
Carl has done an outstanding job of coaching his players up for a long time now. He deserves a lot of credit for that. He has developed a lot of talent over the years at Parkersburg. He has been great for the game of volleyball in the state. He does have a tendency of pushing the boundaries from the bench at times. I don't blame him for trying to get into an officials head, it helps more than some people realize, but don't go overboard with it. A coach is absolutely NOT allowed to go to the stand and confront an offical about a call, he did that on more than one occasion Saturday. If a coach approaches the stand once, warn him. If they do it a second time, it warrants a yellow card. There has to be a certain level of decorum maintained in the game.
fans
It seems that some people confuse reaction to a coaches outbursts and officials calls(something that has happened for years), with fans booing the players on other team. Fans, as pointed out in another post, are usually parents and others that are close to the players so they are emotionally into the game. If you see a call you don't agree with, its natural to react. If a coach screams at the students cheering for their team, people are going to react. The Spring Valley fans were not disrespecting the Parkersburg players at all, they have a lot of respect for them as well as all of their opponents. Emotional outbursts toward the crowd by a coach, who should be focused on the game and ignoring the fans, is what is unnacceptable behavior. Coaches are not allowed to approach the official on the stand during a game, that is the job of the speaking captain ONLY.
I did not hear any SV fans
I did not hear any SV fans being rude. I sat beside them thursday and they did not yell anything out of line. I watch them play several times and they have a big following. Volleyball fans usually consist of parents of a player and siblings. SV have a big fan base and it that is good for the sport. I love for these tournaments to take on a state tournament atmosphere. It is good for the sport.
Wow, I can't say I saw that,
Wow, I can't say I saw that, but what was your reasoning behind ALL the pool games?
classless
In response to this statement I would like to clear up a few facts about this incident. The fans from spring valley are not morons but only reacted this way in response to Carl Harnish "Coach of the Year"'s very unprofessional behavior. The games were a battle and there were some controversial calls both ways but the rude comments and rushing the floor to the refs is uncalled for. The only person allowed to speak to the referee on the court is the speaking captain and he rushed the refs three different times. The referee should have given him a yellow card then a red card after that. He made some very smart remarks towards Spring Valley's head coach which should never happen because that is showing the girls bad behavior. I was also sitting near the parkersburg fans when this happened and I heard foul language being yelled across from gym from them. This post sounds very ignorant in the fact that if there is a controversial call every team's fans make a big deal about it and boo, which maybe should not happen but that is how much passion is felt from parents and fans from other teams. This post also clearly shows the type of person that would post it, a moron, because who is childish enough to start name calling on a message board that is supposed to talk about the girls and how well they are doing not meant to be negative and argumentative.
I also saw the rudeness from
I also saw the rudeness from the SV fans. No matter if they don't agree with the opponent coaches or ref calls, heckling the players is just wrong. That shows their daughters poor sportsmanship. The players have to realize that bad calls, angry coaches and bad fans are part of the game and just play because they love volleyball. Why can't the parents? Cheering for your team is good to teach your players. Not booing the others because you don't agree with the coach or ref. The players didn't do anything wrong, according to what you said It was the coach. Stop blaming other people for your bad behavior. Both teams played their hearts out and all of the games were exciting. If you want to be a ref and give out yellow and red cards, then do it. A forum can talk about anything. Positive or negative discussions. It looked like compliments were given out. SV is a good team. They have a high level of skill. So do the other teams in the pool.
Let's move on.
