Finals - Musselman defeated Woodrow Wilson 2-1
I hesitate to critizize this website considering it has been the only media outlet (internet) to give volleyball any coverage at all over the past 5 years, although they have been slipping this season. Considering no polls have been presented thus far I thought it would be fun to contribute some viewers polls. So heres my attempt at the top 10 in AAA
1. Musselman- undefeated vs. WV teams, quality wins- Parkersburg, Woodrow Wilson, Bridgeport, Sherando (VA), James Wood (VA), Daniel(SC)-Ranked #2 in AAA, Lexington(SC)-Ranked #1 in AAA, Pickens(SC)
2. Parkersburg- I beleive only one loss to WV teams ( vs. Musselman), quality wins: Woodrow Wilson, Spring Valley, Charleston Catholic, GW?, Kentucky teams?
3. Spring Valley- Lost to Park. 2-1??
4. Woodrow Wilson- Runners-up in Capital Classic- Big physical team
5. George Washington- split with Charleston Catholic
6. Bridgeport- Runners-up in Oak Glen Inv. (lost 2-0 to Musselman)
7. Cabell Midland
8. Winfield
9. Greenbriar East
10. South Charleston
Not too much seperation among the top 5 should be a very competitive post season. Let see everyone else's polls, A, AA and AAA??
i like to watch games where
i like to watch games where the coaches allow the setters to run the floor making their own decisions regarding the game the way it should be. Ive noticed a couple of the teams mentioned on here that the coaches dictate two players tops to be set and the setters are yelled at or given the evil eye if they set somewhere else or God forbid take a 2 ball, like they dont want the stats of their only two hitters to go down. Has anyone else seen this?
Relative strength of teams and schedules
As of this date, October 7, Charleston Catholic's record is 39-4-2. CCHS is 3-0 vs. Spring Valley, 2-1 vs. Beckley Woodrow Wilson, 1-1 vs. South Charleston, 1-1-1 vs. George Washington and 0-1-1 vs. Parkersburg during this regular season. Charleston Catholic won the Beckley Woodrow Wilson tournament (beating Beckley), won the St. Albans tournament (beating Ritchie County twice) and won the West Virginia Bishop's Cup tournament (beating Roanoke, VA Catholic). In last week's Capital High tournament, CCHS was the top seed from its pool by virtue of tieing Parkersburg and decisively defeating Beckley, Philip Barbour and Winfield before losing to Beckley in one of the semi-final matches in three close sets. Previously this season, Charleston Catholic defeated James Monroe and Cabell Midland in the Charleston Civic Center showcase. Charleston Catholic has also defeated Winfield twice, Ravenswood twice, Wirt County, Summers County, Parkersburg South, Greater Beckley, Williamstown, Capital, Huntington and Greenbrier East. Charleston Catholic arguably plays the most difficult schedule of any school in any class in the state--a schedule that is predominantly comprised of the top volleyball teams from all three classes.
Charleston Catholic
Top 5 team no matter what the class.
strength of schedule
No disrespect to Charleston Catholic, they certainly are the class of A/AA, but Musselman and Parkersburg have gone out of state to find tougher competition. So to say Charleston Catholic plays the toughest schedule because of the in-state competition they face would be inaccurate (they do play the toughest schedule of A teams for sure). Parkersburg traveled and played in a big tournament in Kentucky and Musselman traveled to South Carolina to play in the Dorman Tournament of Champions (one of the premier volleyball tournaments in the south (u must have been a state champ or runner-up in your state in past two years to be invited) and not only faced the top teams in SC/Georgia/tennesee but several teams that were ranked in the country. They also play Sherando H.S., James Wood H.S. out of VA and Fort Hill (MD) who are as good as anyone in WV.
1. Mussleman (good pick for
1. Mussleman (good pick for number one)
2. Spring Valley (they have the edge over Parkersburg)
3. Parkersburg(they could be 1, 2, or 3. Not much seperating them from SV)
4. Woodrow (good play in tournaments)
After the the top four it is a toss up. Cabell Midland, George Washington(has lost to Woodrow every time this year), South Charleston or Bridgeport.
Now I do not agree with Nicholas County being in the top 10. There big wins have come against AA and A teams. They do not have any quality wins against any big time AAA schools. They are a top 25 team at best.
Midland, Woodrow, Hurricane,
Midland, Woodrow, Hurricane, and Huntington played tonight...everyone basically dismantled Huntington..Midland crushed Woodrow and also beat Hurricane in 3 close games..Woodrow beat Hurricane by 5 in both games after Woodrow was down by 10 or more in first game...was some pretty good volleyball. I believe Midland is better than Woodrow and Hurricane is just as good as either team. Midlands hitters are short but STRONG!!
ok
I havent actually seen Nicholas play but they did have some decent wins against some good AA schools..and had beat Greenbrier East a few times I believe...so that 10 spot was kind of a blind guess for me. I guess you could maybe place Winfield there. But I must say there are plenty of A and AA schools that on alot of nights could beat any AAA team from #2 on down (leaving out Musselman, I think they are just very good). Catholic has beat plenty of them (SV 3 times)and Wirt beat SV as well. I agree top 3 interchangeable, I only put Pburg ahead because they have beat SV like 3 of 4 times or something. It just depends, I guess though on any given night anyone could win. Midland, Woodrow, and GW (in my opinion) are a toss up...and then Hurricane is someone to look out for more so than SC or the others. Actually I think Woodrow, Midland, and Hurricane play eachother tomorrow, should be good games...
Woodrow has 3 wins against GW
Woodrow has 3 wins against GW and they are 2 and 1 against Midland. Nicholas County lost to Greenbrier East. They do not have any wins against any team in the Possible top 10. Feels like they are padding their record for better seeding during sectionals and regionals. Other teams have done that and they did not deliver during sectinal and regional time (Princeton 2008-2009 team lost in sectionals while playing a heavy schedule of unranked teams in AA and A, they rarely played top tier AAA teams).
Midland has not lost to
Midland has not lost to Woodrow everytime this year they won the Greenbrier East tournament very decisively. This team is tough do not let their size fool you, they are a force. If anyone has ever watched Spring Valley and Midland play one another, they will tell you it is the best volleyball WV has seen in many years considering the rivalry.
I think if you read the prior
I think if you read the prior post more closely, you will see that the writer was referencing that GW has lost to Woodrow every time. Also, after watching midland play several times this year, yes they have a lot of talent....but in my opinion...way too much drama and attitudes. If they can get those issues resolved they will be a team to watch come playoff time.
Thanks
Thank you vbnewbie for clearing up what I posted. Cabell Midland is not in the top 4 but they are right outside looking in. They are a good team. GW can not be ahead of Woodrow, they have lost to them every time this year. My 2 and 3 picks can be argued with. I placed Spring Valley at 2 because they dismantled Parkersburg at the CM tourney. Parkersburg can be placed from 1 to 3. Woodrow is strong at 4 with CM and GW behind them.
Polls
I agree that 1, 2, and 3 are very interchangable. Spring Valley demolished Parkersburg during pool play but Parkersburg beat them in the finals the same day to win the tournament. I have seen all three teams look great and struggle as well. It will come down to who gets the right rotation in place by November.
polls opinion
My opinion...
AAA
1. Musselman
2. Parkersburg (did lose to Spring Valley also once..at Midland Tournament maybe? that could be wrong)
3. Spring Valley (could possibly be No. 2, but head to head shows Pburg to be better)
4. George Washington (playing very well, beat some quality teams)
5. Woodrow Wilson (BIG!!)
6. Cabell Midland (hot and cold, but overall very good!)
7. Hurricane (beat Winfield and South Charleston pretty convinvingly...has only lost a few games)
8. Bridgeport (haven't seen play, but heard good things)
9. South Charleston (good team)
10. Nicholas County (has beat some pretty good teams)
AA- looking at Ritchie, PB, Oak Glen, Independence, Tyler, Summers, Ravenswood
A- Charleston Catholic, Greater Beckley, Williamstown
