Top Eastern Panhandle teams
Who will represent the panhandle in March at the state tournament?
With the new format we can get 2 teams there.
Jefferson -still has Dakea Marshall as far as we know.Plus Dezi.
Musselman -has 3 or 4 starters back with Stephenson being key player.May be top team in area.
Washington-who knows, they will probably be young and take some lumps.
Our Eagles will be a little young with alot of juniors. We have alot of height and the best shooter maybe in the area in Brooks.Boarman should be a force as well as Katie.lauren is a super sophomore. It would be fantastic if our boys and girls both could make states so the crazies can venture down the road to the Civic Center!!!
Martinsburg -has Robinson back and The new player Brewer is really good from what I heard. I heard Notre Dame,WVU,Duke,Virginia to mention a few.It could only be hype or rumor.
I cannot wait for coach Church and Merica to lead our troops to a hopeful tourny run.
Hedgesville vs Martinsburg
This should be a good game tonight. I know Hedgesville wants to come out and try hard to win this game since everyone seems to think the Bulldogs are the best team in the area. And Martinsburg wants to dominate to send a message to Hedgesville, the other area teams, and the state that they are a force to be reckoned with. I think Martinsburg will win because of matchup problems. Who will guard Robinson and Brewer are the main questions and if they go to a zone how will they stop Brewer from shooting over the top or Robinson from penetrating? If Pinkett can stay out of foul trouble and slow down Boarman the Dogs should cruise to the win
It will be a good game
Martinsburg will not blow us out. We are better than most think and once we get together as a team we will be just as good. We are slowly getting better. By seasons end,we will be able to compete even better. We have alot of young kids playing heavy minutes right now. The key for us tonite will be to score with them and slow them down.It will be hard,I agree to stop the big 2 plus Pinkett. We have good players too that nobody gives us credit for and I definetly think our coaching staff can make better adjustments.I say Martinsburg can win by 10-15 points since its on their home court, but by seasons end it will be a 4-5 point game either way.
GO EAGLES!!!
The Eagles will need to score
The Eagles will need to score close to 60 points to beat the Bulldogs who are averaging close to 75 a game and thats with several games the starters only playing half to 3/4 of the game. So if they slow them down to about 60 Hedgesville will still need to find a way to score against Martinsburg and so far they haven't shown that. Now I'll admit by seasons end the score will probably be closer as Hedgesville gets better and they make adjustments but I just don't see them beating Martinsburg unless Martinsburg beats themselves with unforced turnovers and incredibly poor shooting.
other thoughts
So what have we learned since the first post on this thread was written?

My aunt lives a few houses down from where they moved and a few of the local kids shoot around and play pickup games across the street.I saw her playing one day and she outshoots/plays most of the boys.Someone at HHS said she has as many as 15 bigtime D-1 offers. I heard Notre Dame,WVU,Duke,Virginia to mention a few.It could only be hype or rumor.
UNQUOTE
Jefferson-still has Marshall and Clinton and still the team to beat. Marshall can be the scorer or the general, either way they can get the job done. Diehl has shown she knows what she is doing and makes the adjustments neccessary.
Musselman-yes has 3 or 4 starters back but hasn't seemed to be very consistent, but if the coach figures out the best way to play them, certainly can't be overlooked. I am sure that as the season goes along they will come together.
Washington-has the REAL super sophmore in Jazmine Hosby, shouldn't be a factor this year, but stranger things have happened in the area.
Hedgesville- Definitely doesn't have the best shooter in Brooks, she doesn't seem to be having a very good year so far but still can hustle, Boarman still isn't very consistent, but if her team mates can get her the ball can score big, Leborious seems to have stepped up this year and scoring alot, why wasn't she playing more last year, Hockenberry quit so is not a factor, the coach should switch the 1 & 2 positions, the little Mason girl does not seem to be ready for varsity pressure but Hayes seems to be able to do it, and last but not least this team needs to play as a team and one of the girls, and I am not naming names, needs to stop trying to do things on her own because it doesn't work.
Martinsburg-with Robinson and Brewer, the new girl, they shouldn't be able to be stopped, BUT the rest of the team needs to be able to step up behind them every game. Pinkett has developed into a deceivingly strong post player, Wright seems to be a pretty good pg but she is young and most teams would try to exploit that I assume, Hill, not quite as good as the hype, but can play if she wants to, Rogers can shoot the 3 when they need it and like Hedgesville, doesn't have much of a bench otherwise. It's amazing what a year and a "transfer" can do for a team isn't it?
This will be quite the interesting season I believe, and I hope to get out and see more games, I am relying on newspaper and internet articles quite a bit. The playoffs will be barnburners for sure.
My thoughts
Jefferson indeed has Marshall and Clinton. Marshall is a talented player but her conditioning hasn't always been the best. They may also struggle when dealing with presses and man to man defense. I'd still consider Martinsburg the team to beat up to this point in the season.
Musselman indeed can get better and has to get better if they want to even think about making any noise in the postseason. They have to cut the turnovers down or its going to be a long miserable season.
Washington has Hosby who is a very talented player who will only improve. At this point she still needs a work to do but she is young and with the right coaching could be one of the best to come out of the area. Against Martinsburg it said she got most of her points against 2nd string players.
Hedgesville like Musselman lacks consistency. As I said before Brooks is not the best shooter in the area but she is good and hustles and gives her all on the court. Leborious is a good outside shooter but isn't physical enough inside. She is similar to Rogers for Martinsburg in that if given space they can hit the open shots but pressure them and they don't have the ball handling skills to go by people and shoot or find the open man. As I said before Hedgesville goes as Boarman goes if she can't develop inside presence they will falter.
Martinsburg I'd have to agree with all that you said but would add also that Martinsburg needs to work on stopping people as well. It is very difficult to slow Martinsburg down. It looks like their lowest scoring game has been 67 points and with their starters not even playing 3/4 of a game some of those games they would have scored even more.
All of these teams will have trouble with ball players from other parts of the state many of whom play AAU ball during the offseason to work together with their current teammates and to develop their skills. AAU ball in the EP is in its infancy and as was said in another post many of the girls play on different teams which keeps their HS teams from having familiarity and to roll as one from start to finish of a season
My assessment now
Jefferson-I don't know if they can be deemed "team to beat" unless you mean they are champs until somebody dethrones them. They lost to a mediocre Millbrook team. I think the jury is still out.Marshall can carry them, but needs help to beat good teams.
Musselman-It is a tough time right now for them and they are either going to come together and win some games and gain confidence or they are going to fold.I think its a fine line here.
Washington-Isn't Hosby a freshman? She shoots 75% of the shots and rightly so,so she's going to score. They will not be a factor in the area for at least 2-3 years.
Hedgesville-I think they played maybe above their heads early. And the expectations became unfair. But Brittany has been consistent when she gets the ball, which has been the biggest problem. I think Grey is awesome when she has time to shoot and her and Leborious are about the same as far as that goes. I don;t know who you are alluding to when you say someone needs to play team ball. I think all of the girls try to help get others involved, its just when you don't have strong point guard play, the whole team suffers.Mason has a huge heart, but unfortunaltely she is small and she can't help that.If all of the girls had her heart,I think the team would be better.Coach Merica hopefully will get us turned in the right direction and make the necessary moves before we get into games against Musselman,Jefferson again and Martinsburg.Brooks and Boarman have to lead us to win,the rest are role players.I disagree with switching the 1 & 2. It would not be an upgrade.
Martinsburg- Robinson,Brewer and Pinkett are giving them about 60 points a game between them. And with Pinkett stepping up and being consistent it is hard to stop them.If she can maintain that, they will be tough to beat.Wright has been OK and Hill has contributed little things. I thought Martinsburg was going to be good this year before the transfer. Not as good of course ,but good. The same could be said about alot of transfers such as when we lost Nate Sowers to Martinsburg. But coach Church has always had Martinsburg kids transfer to him and help him (Tony Powell). Like last year,Martinsburg lost Marshall when she had a family issue, had they had her, they probably win the area. Musselman softball beat us a few years ago for one reason,Courtni Williams transferred from jefferson. She killed us.I don't think its always fair, but one school cannot blame the other for transfres because they have benefitted in the past from a transfer..I just hope Mo Newby helps our boys beat the Dogs and Applemen this year as we have already beat the Cougars.I think the Eagles boys will win state.
GO EAGLES!!!
some answers
Maybe we should clear some things up, you obviously are a Hedgesville fan/parent, I am a Hedgesville graduate who played basketball years ago and loves the high school atmospere.I go to as many games as I can and I am sure I see things a bit more objectively than maybe you do. That is fine that you feel the need to make everything look rosy, but you need to be realistic and see what everyone else sees. One of their HUGE problems is that there is a player who started last year and is starting this year also. She has caused more discord than anyone else. The coaches tell her to one thing, and she goes out and does completely the opposite. While you may not know this, because I am sure you are getting a totally different story from her, its a big problem that has to be addressed.Sure she hustles, she gives her all every game, but yet if she doesn't learn quickly that she is going to have to LISTEN to her coaches, she is going to lose more games for them than she will help win. I wouldn't even be writing this if itwas a once in a while thing but it happens every game and the coaches get mad and frustrated and so are her team mates who ARE listening.
You mention that she and Boarman are the leaders, and the rest are role players. Where do you get this information? Everyone on the team has their own role, including those 2. That was pretty unfair to say that they are the ones who will lead them to win, with the rest as role players. Coach Merica doesn't want girls who think they are the only ones who can do anything. Where do you get this from? Your own observations/hopes? Apparently you are, because this is not the scenario that is playing out. Hedgesville needs to play as a team, period. If everyone does their job they can win, if one or two decide to take it upon them selves to try to be hero's, they will lose, period. There are those who need to realize that their children really aren't as good as they think they are.
Its my opinion only
I have a right to it and I feel that Grey and Brittany Boarman are the top 2 players on this team. Who are the leading scorers and most well rounded (offense and defense)????? Thank you. If those 2 don;t score,we struggle to get it from anyone else. Every team has role players. That was not meant to degrade anyone.Seems to me Martinsburg is doing well with 2 main players (maybe 3 with Yolanda Pinkett) and the rest play their role.Everyone cant be the main players unless you have 5-6 equally talented players which coach Merica does not have this year. He USED to have it 3-4 years ago with Reed, Guell and Ashton and Faulkner and that group, but not now. He has 2 main players in my OPINION
GO EAGLES!!!
Well of course you have a
Well of course you have a right to your opinion, but it does not make it the right one. It is obvious that your daughter is the one who takes things upon herself , which is not a good thing. She is not one of the top two on this team by any means. Yes she hustles, yes she can make things happen when she feels like it, or when she thinks she can try to be a hero. She makes too many low percentage shots when she has an open person ready to take a higher percentage one. Coaches do not like this.
There is some actual talent on this team (basketball skill, court awareness, and unselfishness) those are the true measure of a good player. Its actually too bad that whoever is keeping the stats for this team is missing so much. I have noticed after a few games that things are off. But that's not even the point.
You are trying to make an issue that your daughter is only one of two on the whole team who can play offensive and defense. Do you actually know ANYTHING about basketball? I ask this only because you have the wrong idea of what is right and what is wrong in a basketball game. The idea is to listen to their coaches and run the plays they call and basically take their lead and advice on what they need to do, not take it into their own hands. I see quite a few girls who are doing what they are supposed to be doing AND scoring AND playing defense. Lets now see the whole team do it.
Now when he had Reed, Ashton, Butler, Guell, Finafrock and a few others, you have to understand they they all played together on traveling teams for years, they didn't play with a girls from every school, they were ready when the season came because they always played together. The coaches didn't have alot of work to do, AND they got to develop as a high school team from the time they were freshmen, and yes I played for a time with them.
He isn't ever going to have that again, the only teams that do are the ones in the state who do keep their teams together year round.
Now if you think the coaches have only 2 MAIN players, you must have a jealously issue that you need to work on. Its not who scores the most or rebounds the most, etc etc, it's whether or not the team plays together and is successful. Unfortunately you have stars in your eyes where your own daughter is concerned, especially now that others are passing her by in many areas. Things that have been written on this board, have been written by many people who haven't had the opportunity to even watch the Eagles play yet this season. After this has happened opinions will change and many will be surprised I am sure.
One last thing, I hope that none of the players find and read this board. I'm sure it would be hurtful to find out that a players parents has such low opinions of them and such high ones for her own daughter. You see, they know who has what role on this team, you may be surprised to know yourself. I actually talk to coach quite a bit and I do not listen to any players who whine about being yelled at or how mean he is, it is usually deserved. It's not because the coach is being mean or trying to single anyone out, but if they need to be singled out for doing some really dumb stuff that they were told NOT to do, then so be it.
So why don't you try watching a game through different eyes next time. Take off those blinders please.
Berkeleybball
You can blame me for whatever you want, because you know what I am not arguing any more . It is unfair to blame one player for a team not playing well on a given night. I am sorry to have stirred you up.I am not a parent. I don't see things the way you do,so let's leave it at that.We cannot have continuous termoil and more importantly ,jealousy to succeed.
GO EAGLES!!!
the ville
I did not blame you for anything other than thinking your daughter is maybe better than she really is and not really knowing enough about the actual game to be able to tell whether or not she is doing well or just going off on her own. There IS a difference.
I did not "blame" one player for not doing well on a given night, I said that she cannot go off on her own when she is told specifically what to do. The coaches all know this, and don't think that all the rest of the girls don't know it also. They are there in the huddles, they are there in the locker room.
You do not stir me up, it is just rather funny when a parent thinks that their child is so much better than they really are and then comes on here and acts like they aren't the parent, when it is obvious you are to everyone.
I am a former player of Coach Merica and Fiery, I have no grudges against anyone or more importantly jealousy! I am not the one who is causing the turmoil you see. I would like to see the team do well and some of the things I have seen tell me they won't, unless changes are made. Last, I have no reason to be jealous, I had my time and now I don't play anymore, which was my choice.
Call transferring what you want
Transfer, recruit, family move, change of jobs, whatever. It happens here and it happens everywhere and it will never be stopped. But I agree one school that benefits one time cannot blame another school that benefits later or more.
Heck, one year Hornbuckle(now in WNBA) and Montgomery (now at UCONN)won state for Capital and then transferred to South Charleston and won 3 more. They never moved residences. What gives?
I have been on both ends as a coach. I lost a great softball player once because she wanted to win.It sucked to lose her,but I knew she did not want to be frustrated again by the lack of commitment I had from my other girls. It probably cost me 4 or 5 games without her. But 2 years later we had a really good Basketball player come in to our great program that had won a few state titles for basically the same reason. She helped us win more than we would have.
It happens alot more down south where I came from than it does here.Coach Barksdale at Beckley won 15 titles or so,partly because they used to get jobs in the coal mines for parents and they moved in (or not).Same with Logan years and years ago.
In most cases parents have a good reason(coaching, lack of committment from other teammates) to transfer and if they see fit,so be it.Its a free country.
Mussleman losing to Berkely Springs
As I listed in a previous post, coaching would be their downfall. You need to make adjustments when something doesn't work. When you give up 16 points off of the same play that's a pretty good indication you should try something else. Musselman dominated Berkeley Springs last year with basically the same team since they only lost 1 starter. The coach is in his 5th year so he's familar with Berkeley and their style of play. Nothing against Berkeley but Musselman was a top 10 ranked team last year. Based on the 30+ turnovers I would suggest that the coach go back to what made them successful last year and make small changes not completely overhaul the offense.
Musselman is back baby!!!!
The girls took care of Jefferson last night. Brittany Marsh is back in the line up and we will continue to roll.
BIG WIN!!!
Big Win for the girls...Marshs defense was the key...she took 5-6 charges. I tell you ,we are different with her in there. We still had way to many turnovers.I was hoping Martinsburg would lose last night. They were down at half but took control in the second half it looks like. I see this area as still very much wide open.Martinsburg a slight favorite and Musselman and Jefferson a close second, then Hedgesville.
B. Marsh is key
I totally agree Musselman has not been the same w/out their defensive intimidator and rebounder out of the lineup, Brittany Marsh. They should be able to get back to form now that she is back in the lineup. Lookout Martinsburg and Hedgesville don't sleep on Musselman.
I don't think Martinsburg
I don't think Martinsburg will sleep on any of the area teams and might come out even more motivated to play hard. They know they will get the best from the other area teams because of all the hype surrounding them.
Martinsburg
The Bulldogs had a tough game last night against visiting Spotswood, Va. Spotswood is a very good and highly ranked team with a couple D1 prospects on their roster. Their point guard, Carter Williams, has already committed to a D1 program. Martinsburg had some problems early in the game but picked up the defensive pressure in the 4th quarter and OT. They finally frustrated Williams and Spotswood into several key turnovers. Iesha Robinson scored 30 points to lead the way for Martinsburg and had several clutch buckets and free throws in OT to seal the win. Da'Shel Wright put a lot of pressure on Williams and showed why the coaches rely on her to guard the other teams top perimeter player. Yolonda Pinkett was dominate on the boards and blocking shots and Brewer provided offensive firepower as well. The Bulldogs will still need more help from their bench so they don't overwork the starters but it seems like the starters are in very good shape and able to play a lot of minutes. Jamie Hill also did a good job defensively and helping to break the press.
top teams
I think the addition of Jackie Brewer to Martinsburg will make them much better as she brings a 22 ppg ave from her VA career. I also don't see any jealousy or rivalry between her and Ieshea over who gets the spotlight which will only strenghten the team.
Hedgesville is always consistent, the coaches there always get the most out their players. They are probably the number 2 team in the EP.
Musselman lacks consistency. They have good talent but their history shows the coach isn't able to adapt and win games. They should have beaten Nitro but in the end Nitro adjusted and won while Musselman's coach never made a change. I feel they match up well with MHS and HHS talent wise but coaching will be the differnce in those games.
Jefferson will be tough but they lost a lot due to graduation. They should never be counted out and they have a good coach but I don't know if they will be able to replace the Diehl/Danno combination.
Washington is starting fresh and could pull off an upset here and there but will probably need another year if not two before they will be a factor in the area. Keep an eye on Jasmyn Hosby a freshman with a 17 ppg ave
The key for Martinsburg will
The key for Martinsburg will be how well Brewer and Robinson work and trust their teammates. If they make the extra pass then Martinsburg will be successful if they try to do too much by themselves they will falter against quality teams.
Hedgesville goes as Boarman goes. If she is not dominating inside then they will struggle due to lack of another inside presence and not enough quick athletic and defensive minded guards.
Jefferson will struggle some due to graduation but I could see them surprising and beating Hedgesville or Musselman.
I'll agree with the Musselman team and consistency and I'm not sure they can match Martinsburg athletically. Stephenson really needs other players to step up and help her.
Washington will definitely need some time to build a squad. Hosby is a good player it will be interesting to see what she does against the other local teams. She is quick and athletic not sure about her outside shooting touch.
Musselman losing to Berkeley
Musselman losing to Berkeley springs is a shock to me. Berkeley Springs is a decent team but to lose to them by 20 means they really need a lot of work especially with their passing because to average 30 turnovers over the last 3 games is crazy.
Musselman
Musselman is not as good this year it seems. It may be that they lost their point guard and it may be they got too bigheaded after being successful last year with that press as their weapon. Teams may have figured out the press now and instead of changing, the coach stays with the same. He may have had his best chance to advance to states last year. This year ,as of now,its between Mart and Jefferson. It will be tough to beat Martinsburg the way they play defense and score. They are the most balanced team so far.
GO EAGLES!!!
The coach should have seen
The coach should have seen that the Burch girl is quick enough to break most presses. Sounds like you guys are right and they were slow to react and make adjustments. Maybe this will just be a learning lesson for the coach and the team and they can improve. Its still a long season.
Shock and Awe
30 turnovers is crazy but there are other issues. For one, why does the coach wait so long to pull off the press? They scored 16 pts. off the press in the second half.
Musselman
After what I saw against Nitro, you can take us out of the equation. We are not as talented as we think or evryone else thinks.
Sorry to hear that Big Apple
Sorry to hear that Big Apple
Hedgesville in Florida
From what I've read the Hedgesville girls did well in the Potter's house tournament in Jacksonville. There only loss came to eventual champion and #10 in the Nation according to ESPN Potter's House Christian. They lost to them 85-25 although it probably would have been worse if Potter wouldn't have let up in the end. But to lose to #10 in the nation like that isn't anything to hang their heads about. Most teams in the state would be crushed by them. But they rebounded and finished third in the tournament so they should come back with some confidence. Unfortunately for the rest of the Eastern Panhandle that might mean some trouble in the future. It appeared that Boarman was leading the way. For me as she goes so goes Hedgesville.
EP thoughts
After reading comments on this board,I would like to offer up some thoughts. I have seen all of the teams except Jefferson. But I know all or most of the kids on all of the Berkeley teams. First of all,I hope other teams continue to write off the Applemen. They will be shocked to see how good we are and will get.Henderson is a good young guard that will surprise along with Stambaughand Nikki Stephenson gets very little accolades, yet she is a 2x all state pick.We have the most senior laden club which means alot. I agree however that no team up here matches Martinsburgs 2 scorers. Robinson is even better this year with the running mate Brewer, who has already committed to VCU. They are a hard matchup. They have 2 wildcards besides the 2 "big dogs".They are Hill and Rodgers. If you man them up,it is hard to find 2 players good enough to stop the big dogs one on one AND stop Hill. If you zone them, they bring in Rodgers who has hit a ton of 3's already.Martinsburg and Musselman are equally deep on the bench.Hedgesville has some size and shooters, but lacks ballhandlers, which will kill them against the Musselman and Martinsburg pressure.Jefferson ,who knows for sure? They have Marshall and Clinton, but are young everywhere else.Seems to me if you stop Marshall, you pretty much will take away their punch and this year they have no player that can step up and score 15-20 like Danno or Diehl last year.Coaching edge goes to Merica at Hedgesvillewith Diehl a close second.Marsh and Mackey are a toss up.The jury us still out somewhat on Mackey because of what he inherited last year.He made big changes plus has alot more talent so give him a season.Marsh had the team to beat in my opinion last year, but whiffed in the playoffs, plus he has been coaching longer and has established his system.Perhaps after this year,we can revisit who is the better coach. In short, the season will be fun, don;t count us out!
John Marshall vs Musselman
What was the score of this game? I still haven't been able to find out.
I'd probably have to agree
I'd probably have to agree with you about overlooking Musselman. You are right they are better than people are giving them credit for and I think I overestimated Hedgesville. Your right about it being hard to stop Martinsburg but I'm not so sure about the depth I just don't think Martinsburg has enough depth. I think they need to bring up at least one player from JV to help them out. Hedgesville's lack will be with speed and yes ballhandlers as well. Melissa Taylor for Jefferson is an improving player who played AAU ball over the summer and developed a decent turnaround jumper and should help inside although her ballhandling needs to improve a lot. Mackey did a good job early with just getting rid of the bad seeds and setting a new tone and getting the girls to work together. Pinkett and Wright for Martinsburg contribute more defensively at this point. Pinkett usually gets her points from offensive and defensive rebounds and with all the other offensive weapons Wright seems content on just making passes and playing pressure defense which contributes to steals for her teammates but she is capable of scoring.
Bulldogs look pretty good
Martinsburg scrimmaged Frederick, Md last night and won all but one quarter which they lost by about 2 points. Even with an off shooting night from Brewer and Robinson the other players contributed well and they improved on breaking the press. Da'Shel Wright played incredible defense on Frederick's point guard and made it difficult for them to penetrate. Jaime Hill was able to play and did a good job helping to break the press. They still need help at back up point guard and may bring up or play some of the JV players. Does anyone know if the other area teams have any upcoming scrimmages left before the season starts?
Hockenberry quit
To play club Volleyball. This is a big loss for the Eagles. Her athleticism is just what we need more of this year. we have size and shooters, but we need that girl that can be quick enough to stop players like Robinson , Stephenson or Clinton. Those athletic types of players gave us fits last year.I feel like Musselman will be right there with Martinsburg. They have 4 starters back as well.We will have to play real well to beat either of them or Jefferson.
GO EAGLES!!!
Hockenberry quitting won't be
Hockenberry quitting won't be as big a loss as you think. I think Hedgesville's squad is still good enough to give the other 3 teams a battle. Her athleticism would have helped to slow down some of the quicker post players like Robinson but I think with the other returning players and if players like Boarman and Leborious play tougher inside her loss can easily be handled. I don't even think she would have started she probably would have been 7th off the bench which is still good. This is not a swipe at her at all she is a decent player but I just don't think the loss will be that big of a deal
I think she may have started
According to the girls,Coach Fiery and Merica are concerned some about depth and rebounding as well as the loss of B Kolb and Breeny at guard. There are many questions in the Eagles team this year, but I feel coach Merica is the best in the area on the girls end just like coach Church is on the boys end. So,if it can be done,Coach Merica will get them there. It just could be one of those years where certain teams are more talented period, both boys and girls.
GO EAGLES!!!
Yea I think depth will be a
Yea I think depth will be a concern for Martinsburg as well. Not a lot of size but they are quick. Also problems with backup point guard and center. They had a good scrimmage against a decent Allegheny HS team that Hedgesville will end up playing this season. They played 48 mins and offensively they seem to be clicking they still need to make some adjustments on defense but the outside shooting was a lot better than expected.
Bulldog fan
How good is Allegany? Did Coach Merica come to see the scrimmage?
I figured Martinsburg would blow them out. Who led the scoring for MHS?
GO EAGLES!!!
Allegany is actually not that
Allegany is actually not that bad. They have decent guard play. A few of them played summer league and they have some big girls. Not the quickest but they run the screens and backdoors well. Didn't see Coach Merica there. Brewer led with 26 pts. they played 6 8 min quarters. After a while martinsburg just put on a 3pt clinic. But Allegany is a decent team they have a guard off the bench that has great handles and makes some nice hard passes and hustles. Not sure about her outside shooting ability but she is fast enough to cause problems
The two teams will probably
The two teams will probably be Martinsburg and Hedgesville. I think they would have the best shot at doing some damage at state. Brooks is a good shooter but not as good as Robinson. She shoots 3's slightly better but Robinson has a better midrange game. And Brewer (the new kid) is by far the best in the area she has already commited to a D-1 program in VA so her focus is just on getting better. Lauren for Hedgesville is too out of control although she is a good jumper so that may help with rebounding. Mackenzie has developed a better outside shot so with her and brooks teams will have to pay attention. Boarman just has to play stronger inside and get mean in there and dominate.
