State tournament teams
Who are the state tournament teams thus far? And how do you think the teams will be seeded. I know North Marion will be #1 but not sure about the rest. So far I know Robert C Byrd, Martinsburg, Huntington and South Charleston have qualified.
BULLDOG FAN
We can agree to disagree. But I will tell you that it is up to the kids to get better on their own.Coaches can't work with these kids except for 3 weeks in the off season. And I stand by my point that if a kid isnt pretty good or very good by their 10th grade year, they are not magically gonna get leaps and bounds better.I have coached over 30 years. This is what I have found. There are few exceptions to the rule, very few.
Now,I have talked to some people up here and around the county and tried to learn more about the Martinsburg coaching staff,as I do not know them well , so I can respond to your post. I also talked to one of the Martinsburg girls players at the boys tournament and from what conversations I have had ,here is what I can read.
From what I have been able to find out, coach Mackey has been very successful in several sports at the school. I understand he had a nationally ranked team in softball and that he coaches football. The football program is very successful and obviously he has something to do with it,at least a little bit.I heard he was also very successful under the previous coach as a girls freshmen coach and won 40 plus straight games.
The young lady that I talked to told me that the coach told them during a time out for only 2 players to shoot the ball FROM BEYOND THE 3 PT ARC because the team hit a stretch vs North Marion where the other players were trying to shoot 3's and do too much instead of do what worked all year and get these girls the ball at critical times. She said the coach never said, just these 2 kids can shoot. He said only they can shoot from 3. THAT IS A BIG DIFFERENCE. I had kids that were not allowed to shoot 3's when I coached. That is not unusual. When I looked at Martinsburg percentage from 3 for that North Marion game.It makes total sense to me why he said to take better shot selection unless you were Brewer and Robinson. These kids are who should shoot when the game is on the line, period.
This young lady also told me that the assistant coach Custer was a big reason why she has a chance to go to college and that he has always helped kids be able to play AAU and that many of the areas best players played for him on an AAU team and that by playing for him these kids believe they can beat anyone they play because he took them to many big time tournaments throughout the country and competed against the best. One of our own parents Nikki Stephensons parents ,said virtually the same of this assistant. His coaching may or may not speak for itself but his talent does anytime he had Nikki,Brewer,Marshall,Robinson on his team and these are all college type players. While you can't credit him soely,I would think he had at least something to do with these kids success which has ended up meaning success for the Martinsburg High program as well.
I could not get much feedback on the other assistants other than the kids liked them,at least thats what the player told me.As far as the freshman coach,I'll leave it alone.........
In closing . It seems there are disgruntled A)fans,B)parents C)coaches or D)kids and sometimes the coach never gets to tell his side of the story.I have been on that side of the fence.
A)Fans always find something,it comes with the territory, but winning wins over fans.Period.
B)Parents get mad or JEALOUS alot because their kid just isn't as good .Instead of being honest with their kid or tell them to work harder, they blame the coach.Sorry folks, all kids cant be the star and won't be the star. Its natural to take your kids side as a parent.
C)Some people wanted Ms Bullett I can gather. I can also gather that other coaches that are on or off the staff also wanted it.In the end,the current coach did nothing but apply, and got the job. The job he did to turn the program around, rather it was his coaching or not or the staffs coaching or not is a moot point. He can't get fired and with the talent coming from what I can gather,he will be there a while. So live with it.
Any coach that is not happy on his staff should really leave though. It is really lame and poor for a coach on the staff to try to take away from what the head man wants to do. I think it is cowardly to try to undermind the head coach, because the team pays for it.
D) Kids sometimes add one word to a sentence that sometimes makes the whole sentence different. I was told point blank that the coach told the kids in the huddle, "only you and you shoot this shot or that shot and the rest of you take layups or clean shots". Instead,as a former coach,I can guarantee you it hurt some feelings in the huddle. But sometimes, when the game is on the line you just have to be blunt. I was always blunt the whole year, perhaps it was a coaching error that the coach waited to tell them in the playoff game, but either way,it probably needed to be said. Kids hear what they want at times. But,if they know what is best for the team, they will do what they are asked to do and many kids do.Some kids know how to help a team and do it,I loved those types of kids.Kids that would rebound, play Defense,or hustle.I loved those kids. Others, always wanna be something they can't be instead of twho they can be to help the team win alot of games.
The best teams have great coaches, maybe Martinsburgs coach is or isnt the greatest,I can only judge him on what I know or see and I know they went real far. BUT the best teams also have a staff that is 100 percent bought in to the system AND kids that understand their roles, are disciplined and work hard on their own in the offseason to improve. Sometimes kids want to do more than they are capable of because of the fact that they want to be seen in the same light as the star players or they want some limelight. This is normal, but not good for the team. Its sort of like an offensive tackle that wants to run the football. He wants in the limelight.Everyone wants to be the star running back. He can never be the star running back. So,he will either block and do what he is good at or not play. Basketball is the same way in many respects.
I venture to say North Marion coach Parrish has all of these attributes in his program.Or pretty close. They won the title.
Congratulations
Congratulations to all the teams who competed in the State Tournament. A special congratulation to North Marion on a great week, but like many of the coaches and staff at the tournament was intrigued at what is going on with the program. I do not think the best are getting the playing time; a lot of us are a little confused at this point. I have to say there is a lot of talent in the state and several young talented players. Sophomores and juniors seemed to dominate this year. I was a little disappointed in not having the opportunity to see Parkersburg South in the tournament. I do believe that things would be a little different had they had the chance to compete. The brackets would have changed and that difference may have proved a different outcome. I wish the best to all the girls and if you have aspirations of playing at the college level, that you succeed. Just remember, newspaper articles, awards, statistics and records have very little importance. Speed, quickness, jumping ability, ball handling, defense, fundamentals and basketball IQ are what most want to know about a player. Again, congratulations to all and I look forward to what next season brings.

I replied to your last post, and feel the need again to reply to this post. I am still curious, what coaches and staff are you talking too. Are you saying the best are not getting playing time, do you mean the tournament in general or are you speaking of North Marion. What program? WVSSAC Girls high school basketball program or North Marion. I believe Coach P. and the North Marion program is headed in the right direction.
North is playing their best players unless there are some that I don't know about that are stashed in the coaches pocket.
North Marion didn't have a great week, but a great season. (North played more games then the state tourney and Park So.)Are you sure you know what you are talking about when it comes to basketball, I'll be the 1st to say that I am slowly learning the game of basketball, but your statements do not make sense to me.
When you say a lot of us are confused do you mean you and California University or you and the unidentified staff and coaches you talk to.
What is your interest in the Program (whatever program your talking about) and who are all of the coaches and staff you are talking to, that you feel the need to post on here in reference to NM (players and coaches). Are you a coach, have a kid playing or what? your comments are welcome, but I'm am confused by the comments here and in your prior post.
I to agree with your comments about the newspaper and press (again for fans), and I agree with your point the tournament would have been different with Park So. The Tournament would have also been different with a solid Morgantown team or Nitro or Jefferson. Are you saying the tourney was not exciting enough?
By the way, North Marion Girls: Kels, Jess, M.Jane, Helga, Wee, Corty, Hall, Haley, Charmed, Tiana, Lexi and Gabby,Coach P., Kolb, Jeff and Josh ----***Great Job***! What a wonderful ride!!!!!
1st with a 5 point lead at
1st with a 5 point lead at the end of the 3rd, HHS should have went zone instead of tryingto play man with players that cannot. 2nd, hold the ball for good shots while eating time in the 4th quarter and pound the ball inside for bunnies or foul shots. Poor decisions, lazy rebounding, and forced turnovers told the story.
well said big apple! i get
well said big apple! i get sick and tired of hearing people whine and complain. everyone else can always do a better job after that fact. nm beat huntington tonight 66-64 on a last second shot. nm missed a shot with four seconds left. they got their own rebound, made a quick pass, and hit a shot as time expired. congrats to nm. i would guess that it was huntington's coach's fault for the loss because when nm missed that shot with four seconds left it did not bounce off the rim the right direction to one of his players. i cant believe their coach was stupid enough to have his team force a missed shot and not have the ball bounce off the rim to one of their players. i saw the martinsburg game vs. nm. that was the first time i saw martinsburg play. i thought they were a pretty good team just not as good as nm. i have been a college player, an assistant coach, a high school coach, and a referee. there are some coaches that are better than others but i have learned one thing with all my experiences. the games are one by the jimmy's and the joe's not the x's and the o's. as a player and a coach i knew as did the other players(those there for the team) that certain people were better and should take most of the shots and told and was told as much. as a player i had one of two choices:get better or whine and quit. one way gave me a chance to be the player i wanted to be the other one no chance. nowadays i see the latter part the most. it is ridiculus.
Read my below post. As you
Read my below post. As you can see I didn't whine at all. NM was the better team and deserved to win. And yes games are won by the players but any good coach will also admit that they lost some games for the team that the team should have won. And I don't think any player will have a problem with a coach saying so and so is better and should take most of the shots but I think almost any player would take offense if the coach said ONLY such and such should shoot. There is a BIG difference.
good luck
to all
May the best team win!
refs?
Will the state tournament refs be the same ones used for the regional games? Shouldn't the girls be entitled to better than amature level for these games? Otherwise, throw out any predictions because anything can happen.
The so called "college
The so called "college officials" are no better, so there probably isn't much hope that we can expect anything than what we have seen so far in the high school arena! Sad but true:(
My Predictions

Championship Game
#1 NM- 63 #2 Huntington- 49
Huntington wins going away.
Huntington wins going away.
semi final games
University struggles with making the necessary halftime adjustments, Huntington wins by 14. Martinsburg plays N. Marion close for a half. Second half, N. Marion empties the remaining gas left in Martinsburg's tank.
North Marion - Martinsburg
I agree Thunder, but I think Martinsburg will get crushed. It will be over by halftime, you don't have to worry about emptying Martinsburgs tank. They will not keep up with you.
Well it looks like all of you
Well it looks like all of you were wrong as Martinsburg stayed with North through 3 quarters and actually if they had made some point blank layups had a real chance of winning by getting a nice early lead. The same problems that Martinsburg has had all year plagued them in this game. costly turnovers and the coaching staff not making adjustments and having a well designed press break. Also the coaches again alienating players by actually telling them that only Robinson and Brewer are allowed to shoot. I am taking nothing away from North Marion they are a good team. Martinsburg had their chances to beat them and let them slip through their fingers. I also wish we had some of the fans that the other teams had because wow they really supported their teams. Made me wish we could have a more central location where its only a cpl hours for most teams but the civic center was great. Even if North loses tonight it will be tough for anyone to beat them next year with all but I believe 1 player coming back
The Staff
Fire them all and promote the freshman coach.
Bulldog fan
I have coached a long time in southern WV and have to tell you that NMarion was better than Martinsburg period. I thought Martinsburg did adjust the press breaker from the previous game when Princeton gave them trouble with press, and actually got NM out of their press early, but NM stuck with the game plan and wore Martinsburg down by coming back to the press when Martinsburg wore down. Martinsburg won 23 games without a true post presence an experienced point guard and they had a short bench.
Most coaches will tell you ,those are the 3 ingredients every team needs to win.You need a point guard,a post player and some depth. You won 9 games last year and 23 this year . I have a hard time with someone attacking the coaches because I have been there. Especially in this case. You don't win 23 games on accident.Martinsburg had opportunities to score in close and other players could not hit the shots. You sound like a disgruntled parent, but when I look at the boxscore I see one player was 1 for 10 from the field and another 2 for 9. I had 2 of the top players in the state one year and I'll tell you this,if the game was on the line,I wanted them to take most of the shots and I told my team that.I venture to say that some of the players are telling fans or parents what the coach said. Well, alot of coahces do the same thing. If the kids are thick skinned, they will do whats better for the team.If they are whiners, they will pout.
It sounds to me like those 2 took most of the shots all year and it worked. Why change what worked all year? You knock a coach for not making adjustments. Did you praise the same coach for winning in overtime, despite not having his best player ,who fouled out? Did you knock him for telling Brewer to score the ball when she scored 11 of 13 overtime points to give the team a win?Did you credit the coaches for holding NM to their lowest 1st half point and FG total of the season? Boy ,the critics come out in the worst of times. If you can do better, apply for a coaching job some time. It is very tough, especially against good coaches and teams. Some times,as in this case,North Marion was better.Martinsburg did well to play with them for 3 qtrs. Morgantown, who by the way has who is considered the best coach in the state,Allen Collins, lost to NM 3 times this year.Maybe it was his coaching that lost the games. He went from being the best to the worst because of those 3 losses I guess?
Some parents have blinders on.Everyone thinks their kid is better than what they are and always blame the coaches instead of telling their kid GET BETTER. I am sorry for ranting, but cougar is correct the coaches are the first to get fingers pointed at them.Coaches in this state make 1 dollar an hour. Some coaches are better than others and make better adjustments. This is at all levels.College ,pro, whatever.Thats the way life is. Someone is always better no matter what you do for a profession.Whatever you do for a living,I would say there is someone better than you.You just don't get blasted on a public forum to see what it is like. But I venture to say that if a team went from 9 wins to 23 in one season it had a tad bit to do with coaching or the way a program was run at least.
Rome wasn't built in a day.
Tonite, you will see a Huntington team that has what many consider to be an inferior coach to the NM coach. But if Huntington wins its going to be for the following reasons,They have 2 really great players (like Martinsburg) a great, experienced point guard (which Martinsburg didnt have) and an awesome post player (which Martinsburg didnt have). Now,after the game,if Huntington wins, you tell me why they won, with an inferior coach. OK???
The biggest difference I see in this part of the state as opposed to the Beckley area where I coached and grew up is not that there are talented players here, its the fact that these kids are blown up way too much at a young age and don't strive to get better when they need to or it that the parents won't be honest with their kids and say "son, you need to get better, then maybe you will get the shots when the game is on the line".It is much different here than other parts of the state in this aspect.Thats the only reason that I can give why more titles are not won up here. The talent is here, there are good coaches here.
Instead its always someone elses fault. Its always the refs, etc.
i don't know why my posts
i don't know why my posts that i am replying to don't go with the original post. so my reply to this is at the top for those who are confused to what i am saying at the top. i would like to blame my third grade teacher for this problem then taking responsibility for myself. who knows where this will be posted.
Okay how about this idiot
Okay how about this idiot reread what i wrote. I never once said that North didn't deserve to win or they weren't good etc. And if you read my previous post you will see that I was critical of the coaching before. I was at the games and an experienced coach with an 8 pt lead and 4 mins left would have used the clock and not kept firing away as if it were a 2 pt game. And did i say the coach said let the two best players take most of the shots NO i said they were told NOT to shoot at all there is a huge difference. North has a better overall team and I knew that it would take a tremendous effort to beat them they deserved to beat us and to win like they did tonight. Also if you know anything about coaching you'd know in order to get a coaching job you have to hope a certified teacher doesn't apply. If your a certified teacher even if you've never coached before you get the job over someone that may have coached 20 years. Vicky Bullett an Olympian applied for the job and wasn't given it because a certified teacher applied as well. Now she's about to coach in the WNBA. I'm not saying Martinsburg coach is terrible at all. You mention having a post player well part of coaching is developing an improving the players you have. And if you have 3 assistant coaches and practice practically every day some improvement should be shown in the players confidence and abilities. And why change what works? Because as a coach you have to have counter moves. Just like if you run a play there is the main option but usually 2-3 other options within that play. If you don't prepare for option 2,3, and 4 and run those options when you have to do it the players won't be able to. By developing the weaker players the stronger players can actually score more and have more energy because they won't have to do it all. I will agree with you in that too many players are blown up like they are great when they are not and they each need to have drive and work on there own to get better. I'm not a pouting parent at all I'm proud of what Martinsburg accomplished and I didn't expect them to beat North.
I'm also not like some people on this board who talk trash. I appreciate and love good basketball and good officiating. I don't taunt either. And yes some had to go to coachin in regards to going from 9 to 23 the biggest being gettin rid of the bad seeds, having a player with more talent coming in. But how about this read the quotes in the paper as well see how often defense is mentioned and how often any players contributions other than the top scorers were mentioned. Its called a team for a reason I don't even expect a coach to say this player or that player did this or that but mention the TEAM because as evidenced by North it takes a TEAM to win. Offense gets people talking but defense wins championships
Bulldog fan
One) As a longtime coach that has dealt with similar parents it is obvious you have to be either a parent or coach to know so much about what they do and dont do at practice I would judge. If you are a coach you are pretty lame and a coward to sellout your head coach. This does and can happen but I truly think you are a parent to care so much and whine.Come on admit it,you are a parent. You probably cuddle and hug your poor baby girl when she dont get headlines...Martinsburg had little else than Robinson and Brewer this year, there ,I said it.They had no consistent play other than them. Some of their kids have not improved and ones that did, from what I saw ,were not consistent. The best point guards they had were Robinson and Brewer, but they had to play other spots because you can't rob Peter to pay Paul.
Two)I have a right to my opinion. You have yours,so don't call me an idiot for voicing my opinion. My coaching record where I came from suggests I know a hell of alot more than you will ever know.I wish I knew who was calling me an idiot....its nice to hide isnt it? Where I come from,we call you an internet terrorist.A person that hides behind the scenes and takes little pot shots but never rears his face.
Three)If you have a problem and are a parent, tell the coach to his or her face, and give him the opportunity to tell you why your daughter is or isnt playing or getting the ball. The facts will probably lie somewhere in his stats or game film.Don't blast him while hiding behind some screen name.Thats real big of you.How many games have you won at a state tournament?
Four) The rules are what they are and this man applied for the job and got it. If Miss Bullett were certified and got her teaching degree,it would not have been an issue then would it?
Five)You cannot blame a coach when a kid doesnt improve over the course of the season. The best players are made in the offseason and during AAU ball.During the season, you generally have 2 hrs to go over gameplans, drills,or whatnot PLUS ALL OF THE PAPERWORK AND SCOUTING AND FILMING. There were some weeks that I put in over 40 hrs as a teacher and then 25 more as a coach,so dont tell me its the coaches job to make kids better. It is his job to put the kids where the TEAM and player will succeed.Sometimes that may mean the player is weaker than he would like, but there is no alternative on the bench,So,maybe he "hides" a player and just asks him to pass ,or to simply rebound because maybe he can't shoot.Sort of like a baseball coach that hides his weakest fielder in right field.Maybe it will help the TEAM more if the player just does what he is good at and not try to be the scorer that he isn't. It cold reality that many parents don't want to see or admit.Instead they cuddle and empathize with their little baby. North Marion happens to have 7-8 players that work hard year round and do what the coach says and the parents have to deal with it.Because of this he has a deeper team and they won PERIOD!.They have 7-8 players that can score and can shoot. So he uses all 7-8 kids to do so.They play 140 games all summer, they dont expect the head coach to magically make them better over 4 months.Put the work in and make the coach use you as a scorer.Don't avg 3 pts one year and 3 the next and expect to get more shots the 3rd year if YOU didnt improve.
Six) A little secret,if a kid isn't good or pretty good by their soph or junior seasons, chances are they are not gonna miraculously get better in a year even. These parents with dreams of college basketball dancing in their heads are unrealistic in some cases.
seven)Your coach sounds too nice.If I were him I would tell you,IF YOU DON'T LIKE WHAT I DO,DONT PLAY.PERIOD.I can bet you thats the way he feels,so if you don;t like it,dont play...its simple. Why make yourself so miserable????
Big Apple
Ok I finally get some time to respond to this. First off I'd like to apologize for calling you an idiot I let my emotions get the better of me. I was upset at the fact that you did not read what I wrote. Again I will repeat this again I DID NOT say the coach was terrible or doing a terrible job. I simply said there were some issues and mistakes in my opinion. I actually think he is a decent coach. I did no different than you and others on the board have done regarding their coaches not making adjustments. Now to your points.
1) Where do you see me whining? Did I once say that Martinsburg should have won the game. NO! I said they could have won the game. I knew going in that it would be very difficult to beat North Marion due to the amount of skilled players they have. As for not having other players I don't think thats totally the case I know there are some that haven't improved much and I have stated in previous post the things that they need to improve. But part of improving is coaches seein the problems and working to correct them. If you have 2-3 assistants have them work with players on post moves, defense, foul shooting whatever needs correcting and develop their confidence. Having confidence is a major part of basketball. Do you expect players to grow in leaps and bounds during the season? No. Most of the work is done in the offseason but if players do not improve any during the regular season that might be somethin to look into. As for coddling I'm probably one of the least coddling people out here. I constantly tell players they aren't as good as they think and that someone else is out there working while you are not. I've seen some of the best players in the nation and I get upset when players from our area think they are great because they are the best at their school. If your not dominating teams, teams don't have to game plan for you and your not being mentioned in more than the Journal and the Herald you need to get out there and get better. And by dominate I don't just mean in the stat sheet.
2) Coaching records don't mean that a person knows alot. It could just mean you had a lot of talent compared to the schools you were against. Now from your post and comments I know this is not the case with you. I know you have knowledge and experience in the game. So don't take the above statement as me saying you in particular don't know what your talking about.
3) I have been asked not to say anything for fear of repercussions but I am very respectful with coaches and understand it is a very difficult job. They are not perfect and we all make mistakes.
4) I'm not sure I said it on here before or not but to me thats one of the most ridiculous rules in regards to coaching. Now I understand it is a rule but it just doesn't make a lot of sense. Its like Pat Summit wanting to come to Musselman to end out her career but sorry the home ec teacher applied so unfortunately we can't give it to you. Anyway thats the end of that rant.
5) As i stated before part of a coaches job is to help a player improve. Now are they gonna grow in leaps and bounds. No. But a coaches job is to improve the team and players. Now if the coach is doing it by themselves yes that makes it much more difficult. Let's take Washington girls team for example. Those girls were not much more than Hosby but as the season progressed other players developed and got better. Their individual skills and confidence improved and they became a better team. If its too many hours then maybe coaching isn't for that person or they need to get help. And you don't wanna hide a player because what happens when due to injury, grades or whatever you need that person. Your not gonna make them as good as the star players but you at least want them serviceable. And with proper coaching that can happen. Part of a coaches job is to make the player mentally and physically better. Players shouldn't expect the coach to make them magically better but they coach should be able to make them somewhat better. I hope all of our area girls work hard this summer.
6) I think very few girls from our area will go on to play ball thats why i promote grades and getting and academic scholarship rather than focusing too much on athletics. Besides academic scholarships are more valuable and there are things such as 4 year academic scholarships since there is no such thing as a 4 year athletic scholarship. Now as for girls not improving that really depends on the person. I've seen both girls and boys improve drastically if they are willing to put in the work. There are some kids that don't pick up a ball until late but work hard and develop very good skills. The key as you pointed out before is THEY have to put in the work.
7) And the kids play because they enjoy playing but if they have a passion for it they also want a coach that will help them and the team improve. We all admit there are some coaches that are better than others. And some coaches can diminish a players desire to play. Like on our jobs if you enjoy what you do but have a sucky boss it makes it a lot harder. If they hurt your confidence rather than help it can wear on you. And kids like some of us are seeing now can't just get up and go to another school well at least not easily. Just like with this economy its not easy just leaving one job and going to another. AGAIN one more time I am not saying that Martinsburg's coach is a bad coach nor am i saying he is doing this. I am speaking in general.
Move on,,,,,the season is over.
Don't you people have anything else to do besides this message board. The season is over.I hope Coach Hall is the coach next year , he is my hero.
Wow
I will say this, I have ALWAYS thought that bulldogfan was a coach. I am still thinking he is and is just trying to make us think he is someone he isn't. I happen to also think that Martinsburg THOUGHT they had the championship in the bag because they THOUGHT they had the 2 best players in the state. Before I get blasted, I didn't say they weren't good, just not the best. With that said, BigApple, are you a parent of a Musselman player? I have always thought you were, maybe it was the name?
Around this area, if you aren't putting up huge numbers every game, or aren't a flashy player (and by flashy I do not mean show off), you don't get alot of press usually. The flashy players usually have attitude, whereas some of the best players quietly put up numbers and are all around good players, not just occasionally. Martinsburg has 2 players who put up huge numbers and can be flashy also. This makes for good press and sometimes goes to the coaches heads a bit too much. How cool is it to see your team in the paper and your opinions put out there for all to read? I am rambling a bit but look at the posts before mine. But my point is that after all the winning and press ends, it may be such a let down that you want to perpetuate it by this kind of forum?
Also, I am still in wonderment about the HUGE difference that one player made for Martinsburg's team this year. I have not heard that her dad or mom either one got tranferred for their jobs, that they needed to move for any other reason than for her to play at Martinsburg with her old AAU coach and team mate. So when you say that parents coddle their children too much around here, what about uprooting your family just for that reason?? Talk about the ultimate coddle!
Happy cat
Read all of my posts.I am a Musselman fan yes. I also have knowledge of the southern part of the state .I came from the Beckley area. Transferring in that area and moreso in the Charleston area happens all of the time. In fact,in Charleston, there is new legislation in Kanawha county to stop transfers. But ,it never has and never will fly because a lawyer will always find a loophole and the Board of Education or WVSSAC has never won a court case to prevent transfers. ALL schools at some time or the other benefit from transfers.Jefferson benefitted last year when Marshall came back. Hedgesville won the boys alot with the Newby kid that allegedly lived with another kid. You can't beat the lawyers that protect these families. So,it is what it is.
Listen, it will always happen. I don't know and cannot prove why any kids transfer.Everyone has their reasons.
You seem stuck on the Brewer family or seem to have issue with them,so why don;t you approach them with your questions. You're beating a dead horse when you can't prove why they transferred or not.Its old news and it was checked 4-5 times this year.Their lawyers covered their bases I guess.
Not trying to be smart.Just stating the facts. The kid is a good player and kid from what I see.Its not her fault where she goes to school.
Big Apple
Yes, I know you are a Musselman fan, but I was just making sure because you were making the references to coaching in southern wv more.
As for the transfer thing, yes it has always happened and will continue to do so, I agree. The thing is that around here it made the most dramatic difference for Martinsburg this year, more than I have seen in a very long time. So therefore I continue to talk about it. Look at last years Martinsburg team compared to this year. Nothing against any coaches, but thats not just coaching, no way, no how. If you disagree that she was the major reason that they were so successful this year, then that is fine, but once again it seems so unfair to the other teams that work just as hard but didn't have the good luck to have someone come in and make that much of an impact.
If you read my post you will see that I am not blaming her, but the circumstances that allow this to happen and I also said she probably wasn't too happy about leaving her school and friends. I don't know too many high schools girls who would, no matter the reason. I am also not trying to be smart.
One of the problems around here, don't know about the rest of the state, is principals just signing off on the transfers because they don't want to make any waves instead of having the courage to say no.
game results
As noted in my previous post, Martinsburg's gas tank was emptied. Martinsburg was barely hanging on in the third quarter and fell in the fourth. I observed several games over the last few days, and the better teams prevailed, closing in the second half. If you are a fan of the game of basketball, you witnessed a balanced attack from N. Marion, working inside/outside and running the fast break while puttting pressure on the key players of Martinsburg. You need to have a third and fourth option with a key player coming off the bench, Martinsburg lacks in this area, two and four points don't cut it. Role players for Martinsburg struggled by not stepping up, N. Marion's goal, check the box score. It sounds as if you are a disgruntled parent based on your comments attacking the coaching staff, but please remember these coaches work hard with these kids for months, sometimes five and six days a week.
I admit I was wrong with the outcome of the Huntington game, I thought Huntington might be able to close on the Hawks who struggled in the opening round. I did note in a previous post that Univesity would give teams trouble, so I deserve some credit for that. If the Rowe girl would have not been injured earlier in the season, University would have run away with the state championship, but once again we as fans should give the coaches credit for keeping the team focused and making it to the championship game. University has some tall kids that grab the rebounds and cause problems on the defensive end.
Tonight's game will be good, these teams know each other, and University has the right ingredients to beat N. Marion. The difference might just be the outside shot.
Are you sure you have been
Are you sure you have been watching the right games, University lost to Huntington. It will be North v/s Huntington tonight.
yes I know
I was hoping that I would generate a sarchastic response from another coach, I was aware of Hungtington winning the game. I was also aware of N. Marion clamping down on Huntington in the championship game. Go HUSKIES!!!
I think its KARMA, what comes
I think its KARMA, what comes around goes around. I don't think that Brewer "got transfered" down here for any reason but one. I say got, because I'm sure it wan't her idea and she probably would have much rather stayed with her friends, but I may be wrong. So I am saying it is karma because when things are manipulated like this then no good comes of it. Well Martinsburg totally changed their team dynamic by doing this but in the end they lost.
North has yet to play a good
North has yet to play a good game in Charleston. Hopefully they are saving it for the Championship. We are currently shooting horible from three point range and we have also missed alot of layups and easy jumpers.
I think the pressure is off now since we are in the Championship, this is what this group of girls have been striving for since they were in the Middle School. I will say this no team will compete harder than North, these girls are all about team work and heart.
Crushed
The game might be over by half time . MHS 79
North 66
The end is near. Have a safe trip home North.
Capital Punishment I think not!
This wouldn't be Jackie
This wouldn't be Jackie Brewers dad would it?
Busted
I'm out of here!!!
state tourney predictions
lets have some fun and predict the games for the tourney. lets see what everyone thinks. here are mine.
Round 1
North Marion 81 Robert C. Byrd 30 -- this one will be over by halftime
Martinsburg 60 Princeton 67 -- i really thought that i would have martinsburg going further before the pairings came out but Princeton is my sleeper pick. don't know anything about princeton besides their scores but it looks like they can put up some points.
Huntington 71 Woodrow 53 -- i think it will be close for a while but huntington will win going away.
University 55 S. Charleston 42 -- this will be the lowest scoring game of first round maybe tourney.
Semi-Finals
North Marion 83 Princeton 70 -- i guess not much of a sleeper for princeton if i have them losing in the second round but i think this has the makings of a great action packed game. North just too many weapons in the end.
Huntington 68 University 45 -- University coach has done a great job since losing their best player rowe. huntington too much bays for uhs.
Championship
North Marion 77 Huntington 75 -- this one will go into at least one overtime. foul trouble will play a role in the end and NOrth's depth will be the difference. Could see this one going either way though. it will be hard for north to match up with bays when she gets the ball. if their pressure d keeps her from getting it though... who even knows what will happen down there. i am excited about the matchups and as you can tell am hoping for a lot of points to be scored.
