Martinsburg - Hedgesville Girls observations
Just as I predicted. MHS won by 19,I predicted 15 and I also predict a much closer game at HHS later on. Hedgesville played a 2-3 zone and Martinsburg did not know how to attack it. They hit a few 3's early, but then went cold and it was tied at the half thanks to Brittany Boarman,Katy and Greyson. If you make Martinsburg play slow down and they are off from outside they are very beatable. Our coaches had a great gameplan and was able to handle Martinsburg presses ,easily I may add. The Martinsburg staff did make one nice adjustment going to a full court all out man after halftime. They just outathleted us at that position. Fun game up until Robinson exploded,we had no answer as she started attacking the basket through our zone. Our guards did not cut her off and in transition, she killed us.Brewer was solid.Pinkett was in foul trouble all night.Last year Robinson beat us in post and in transition. This year it was slashing as well as in transition. We have to stop that penetration from the wing.Brewer hit a couple of pull ups from that spot.
Great game and mark my words,it will be much, much tighter at HHS.Great job by our coaches, they gave us a chance at least.Brittany Boarman is able to do what she wants due to size advantage, but we have to get it to her and then to Katy and Grey on the wings. Great Job Lady Eagles!!!
all i no is.....
Martinsburg played UHS girls today and MB lost 54-43 with out Rowe...but she helped coach and cheer her players on....u all have great teams in the EP......enjoy them....
and be glad ur girls are still healthy and playin.... all that can be taken away in one bad fall or play.....for example UHS lost "another" player today to a ACL tear on the JV...so quite complaining about each other....i would give anything to turn time back and have my daughters injury be gone so she could still be playing....take care and god bless....and good luck to the rest of ur season.....

ok then
if you have read all my posts, I am a recent player, not a parent. I may or may not have been playing ball as long as you. I chose NOT to play college ball, but i could have. I may not have been the best but I know the game. You just seem a bit arrogant at times and it is frustrating when I know how good some of the girls from other teams really are. They can't help that they aren't on the best team in the area, and they can't help the plays that their coaches call and in some cases that their coaches are idiots.
wow
wow the hedgesville fans sound about as ignorant as the musselman fans were. I wish you all luck but wow.. martinsburg girls are tough and I wish you all luck in trying to beat them from what I have saw and watched they have 5 real scorers and most grteat teams in the state have 3 at best per team. and their point guard #1 is argueably the best defensive player in a state where my sister is a starter for a strong team in the msac so my opinion is pretty unbiased when it comes to the panhandle.. and along with the whole fouled out topic.. I respect any player who uses all 5.. you can't take them home with you, it shows you play hard, and thats why you get 5 if you were never supposed to foul you would only get 1. good luck to all the teams and watch out for Huntington they have most likely the best player in the statea and she will make a coach and you inside players have nightmares days after meeting up with her
right back at ya
Hmmm exactly who are you to come in here and act like you know anything about the EP teams? Have you watched all the teams play yet? Obviously not. I will agree that Martinsburgs pg is good, but depending on what refs she gets around here she WILL foul out some games. They just don't usually allow the girls to play it that close. As far as Mart. having 5 real scorers, what you smoking anyway? Maybe you should think before coming on this board and get into our discussions and make bold statements based on a game or two you have watched. If you live so close to Mart. then you also live close to Hedgesville and Musselman and Jefferson/ Go see all their games and then make an observation. Thanks.
Hedgesville-Mussleman Game
Hedgesville turned the ball over 40 plus times...that is pathetic.Musselman is not near as good this year and our press still dominated HHS.
As for Martinsburg ,they are struggling some right now,all teams will go through ups and downs. Some teams never get back up.Martinsburg will I think because they are better than the teams left on their schedule.
Sounds like they are someone
Sounds like they are someone that may not be as biased as some of the others on this board. Although I don't agree with the fact that Martinsburg has 5 real scorers since they haven't shown that yet. They have capable scorers but haven't used them all or some haven't looked to score. Now sometimes fouling out isn't that bad if you have disrupted the other team and haven't hurt your own team in the meantime by having to sit or putting the other team in the bonus. As for the other teams which one has shown that they can be consistent and not just barely beat Martinsburg but beat them convincingly? Look 2 teams from our area can go to states there is no shame in being that 2nd team and giving your school a chance to make waves at state.
fair enough
ok fair enough I haven't been to every game I've been to 2 martinsburg games and 1 hedgesville maybe thatnot enough to judge a whole season... a martinsburg fan says they don't have 5 scorers I was baseing that off the musselman game.. so that could be true. as far as the point guard(#1) goes in 2 games I can say that she is the best defensive player in the state that I have saw considering for 1 the hedgesville game was one I saw and if they are so powerful on offense then they should have made her look a fool right? I am very unbiased in my opinion but haven't you heard there is no crying in sports and thaqt goes for whineing too.. after watching both teams play I am very confident in saying if hedgesville is the 2nd best team good luck to them because first round of states playing a 1 seed they will be matchin g up with team as north marion/motown, or huntington and I don't see hedgesville matching up thats just a personal opinion after haveing watched all teams mentioned. back to the point guard you say she fouls out like its a bad thing?? they give you 5 fouls and any good college coach will tell you you can't take them with you use them part of being a great defensive player is using your fouls thats how u tell an beginner fan from a noviced or expert when you are saying a player isn't that great because she is aggresive.. I do however hope that both martinsburg and hedgesville both make it to states because I will be down there to see how close my predictions on the state will be.. and another prediction for the future teams at states look for GW to be a top team in the next few years they have 3 freshman starters and all are great players.. and just for ur info for anyone who thinks my opinion is biased my sustser goes to none of the schools mentioned
scouts
also I forgot to mention that 1 or 2 games might be all a girl gets when it comes to college scouts seeing them so you may want to tell your daughter to go hard every game if she plans on playing in college because 1 game could mean the difference in what she makes it to. and I say yous baughter berk.bball because its obvious ur a parent and must only have maybe 6 or 7 years experience from watching 1 maybe 2 children play in high school considering your opinions are a lil off.. trust me I have no favoritism towards ne team.. even in volleyball I cheered for hedgesville the first game of states and musselman every game up to the last 1.. I am a fan of EP sports.. sometimes the fans have to set back and be chill though abd lket the girls just play the game...
Martinsburg overated
Hmmm sounds like Hedgesville might be overrated with that #10 ranking. Getting beat by 13 by Musselman and only scoring 31 pts. That game was pitiful. And don't blame it on being off for a week. Hedgesville did not play smart. They went away from Boarman and couldn't adjust to the press by simply flashing someone to the middle they could have beat it easily. I blame that on the coach giving up and the players not noticing the mismatches. Hedgesville was down by 7 with 3 mins left and he took out some of his best scoring options. Hedgesville didn't take advantage of the terrible Musselman shooting and they were very slow on defensive rotations. Musselman had wide open shots that they just weren't hitting until late in the game. Hedgesville tried to press and when Musselman started beating it easily the coach didn't make adjustments.
The press was the key
I think the reason that they got away from Boarman was the press. It was not too often that they could get the ball across halfcourt to set up their offense. She was able to take a couple of 17 footers but isn't that what you want, Boarman 17' away from the basket taking jumpers?
Yes the game was bad
I will agree that this game was not what anyone expected it to be. Our girls just didn't seem to have it in them to pull out the win tonight. That being said, I think they COULD have done it with some major adjustments. We can't have 30 forced turnovers EVER. The coach makes some changes, that doesn't happen. I am not going to be specific because I am not going to point anyone out on here. This is not a new problem either. The first part of the game, the girls were getting it to Brittany and playing unselfish basketball. She was grabbing rebound after rebound, and then coach takes her out for some unknown reason! I don't think any of the parents have ever understood his replacement theory. It is unfortunate that we don't have many to go to on the bench, but if he wants to rest a player fine, but for goodness sakes, get them back in before it gets too late.
I also agree that he gives up way too soon and too easily! 3 minutes still left and he takes out his scorers!!! I think a big problem he has is he isn't showing he has enough confidence in his players to make them feel they can do it too.7 points in this kind of game is easily doable and esp. when you have some great scorers! I only hope that this can get resolved before 2nd matchups happen. This is the 2nd major game where the coach just threw in the towel and let them lose with out a fight.
I'm sorry but i also have to say this too: what the heck was up with those referees?? They needed a leader and not one of them took it. There were way too many questionable calls, both ways, and too many 2nd guesses. The official that is right in front of a play should not be over ruled by one that is way behind the play. Its unfortunate that we can't get some quality officials in our area. Is the point system still in place where the coaches rate the referees after the games? I would hope there is and I hope that the coaches take advantage of it. That being said, I know we just don't have enough people who even want that job, but it is disheartening to these kids who are playing their hearts out to have their games affected by this.If anyone doesn't think that it affects the outcome of the game and the kids who are playing they are very wrong. And to anyone reading this, I am not saying the game outcome would have been different, but then again, how many games would it have been?
Wake up Hedgesville fans
Based on what I saw tonite,Martinsburg could have named the score.Had they not got bored they may have.
You have to score at least 70 to beat them and only the top 4-5 teams in the state can do that. Not enough firepower from any of the area teams to beat Martinsburg. If you try to play slow, they have so many ways that they speed teams up. First game I saw them, they trapped half court, read where they went fullcourt man on Hedgesville to get a big lead.Tonite they used a press after halftime.
I think Martinsburg will have trouble with a top 5 team due to their lack of depth and losing their legs.Unless their coach decides to slow it down some when he gets to state to save his legs.It will be hard to do that and harness their thoroughbreds after letting them run all year and score 70-80 points, but he may have to. The bench is not any better than anyone elses in this area, which is not good.
They have lost to Park South and Morgantown,2 of the state top programs of all time. They were in both games until the end when they started fouling and the defense got lax.Probably because of loss of legs. When you lose your legs your jumper and defensive technique are first to go.
Make no mistake,Martinsburg can win it all with a good seed(which they may get if they win out),alot of luck and bounces (any team that wins it all needs that), and if they can get bench help.
I would say they are 5-6 best team right now but as I have said before ,anytime you have Brewer and Robinson both of those girls are capable of putting up 30 plus, and if a team in the tournament,I don't care who it is,catches Martinsburg on one of those nights, they will very likely get beat by Martinsburg.
To win it all you have to win 3 games and I venture to say those 2 girls will have to be hot all 3 nights, which is not impossible or if they get lucky and get a good seed and an easier first game, maybe they only need those 2 to be hot 2 nights.
They were disinterested part of tonites game and still scored 82 while subbing freely.I was not impressed with them overall tonite, but it shows how explosive they can be.
They need to button up the defense and they throw some lob passes at times which gets picked off. They have 4 ballhandlers on the floor most of the time, which makes them hard to trap and press. Because of this if I were the coach I would slow it down when I face more talented teams in the tournament. This will save their legs. I would also play more zone early to save fouls and legs.
"Robinson exploded,we had no
"Robinson exploded,we had no answer as she started attacking the basket through our zone" Hedgesville has no answer for her. Do i think the game will be closer next time possibly but Martinsburg scored that much and Pinkett was in foul trouble the whole game and Hedgesville couldn't take advantage of it. And Hedgesville is lucky Brewer's 3 pt shot was off or it would have been worse. Boarman didn't do much and when she was scoring she was camped in the lane forever without the refs calling it. And don't even try to say that the refs were one sided considering Martinsburg had 3 players with 4 fouls.
You are going to get knocked off your high horse soon enough
Martinsburg fans, in general, are the nastiest, most hateful fans in this area. Witness the boys game last night against Hedgesville. They always have been and always will be. Apparrently the administration still doesn't care. One good example is the Martinsburg cheerleaders flipping all the way down the the Hedgesville cheerleaders and flapping their hands at them, they also did this at the girls game. If your cheerleaders are allowed to show bad sportsmanship then what do you expect from the rest of the student body? By the way, I don't recall ever seeing ANY sportsmanship awards hanging in your gym!!
Now lets look at a couple scenarios. First, lets take Issac Thornton off the boys team. That happens they def. lose to Hedgesville. Second, take Iesha Robinson off the girls team, they most def. lose to Hedgesville. You can say Jackie Brewer had an off shooting night, well maybe it was because she was being well guarded?? Give Hedgesville some credit here man!
We held them 69, and we scored 50. That's not too bad if you ask me against this "super" team. And I am going to say that the refs WERE pretty nice to your players, considering a few of them should have fouled out!You can't say the refs were calling in our favor! You are darn lucky that 2 or 3 of your starters didn't foul out, may have changed the game a bit huh? Then you could have whined and blamed the refs!
I don't think Hedgesville gets the credit they deserve from some of you. I just bet you were shaking in your shoes over on that bench the whole first half huh? When you underestimate a player or two, they are gonna burn you. So keep on thinking you are so great, then see what happens.
Bet Jefferson didn't think Musselman was gonna beat them did they? Hedgesville didn't get the chance they deserved since their coach took the whole starting lineup out for a good part of the game after they played right with Jefferson the first half. That outcome would have been alot different in that game had he let them play.
So I say you Martinsburg fans, keep on underestimating the Hedgesville girls, because I just bet they'd like to surprise you. Same goes for Musselman, they are playing up to their potential now and everybody had already written them off for the year.
Wow Martinsburg having the
Wow Martinsburg having the worst fans is crazy. Each school has their share of terrible fans and players. I've been to games where racial slurs were hurled. Cursing and derogative chants. And who votes on this sportsmanship award who are we to say it isn't biased? Do people really go yea we're not a very good team and our sports teams aren't that good but hey we win the sportsmanship award.
Now as for taking various players off of teams you can say that about any of the teams in the area Mayles from Hedgesville, Mcdonald from Jefferson, etc. I'm not saying that Hedgesville did not play a good game and that their players are terrible. They have good players. As for Brewers off shooting night yes she was guarded well I was speaking of the uncontested shots that she usually makes with ease weren't falling.
Hold a team to 69?? thats only 6-7 pts below their season average. Martinsburg does not have a "super" team but they do have probably the best team in the area. I don't think the refs were calling in either teams favor and their were questionable calls on both sides. I really wasn't nervous because Martinsburg tends to be a second half team and I figured they would eventually win. Was I expecting them to outscore Hedgesville by 19 in the 2nd half nope. And as for Martinsburg not having a bench your right their bench is pretty weak but then again Hedgesville doesn't have much of a bench either and most teams in our area don't have a deep squad.
And again I dont' think Martinsburg is the best team in the state just the area. North Marion, Parkersburg South, Morgantown, Huntington are all in the mix for best in the state. Morgantown has a deep bench and can shoot 3's from almost anywhere. Martinsburg played them close and can probably beat them. It was hard to tell which team may be substantially better considering there were over 40 fouls called in the game. And no i'm not saying the refs caused Martinsburg to lose i'm saying the refs caused both teams to struggle.
I agree Hville fan
Martinsburg is not as good as they think. They are overhyped. We didn't play well either that night. I am starting to get the feeling they have played their best ball of the season. They lost to Morgantown tonite.
If we take care of the ball and slow them down and make them play half court, like the first half of last game,we can beat them. They cannot stop Katy and Brittany on the inside and Grey from the outside. We just have to have our guards get it there and we will be fine. So I don't seem jealous,I have to give Iesha and Jackie their due respect, but they are not as good as many make them to be.
GO EAGLES!!!
Like I said Martinsburg is
Like I said Martinsburg is the best team in our area right now. As the season goes on maybe other teams will step up. If you were at the Morgantown game you would have seen how good Morgantown is. They hit 10 threes many of wish were contested and they were amazing from the line. they may have missed 2-3 fts the whole game. they are a very good team. Hedgesville's 3 just can't compare to Martinsburgs. Robinson right now I think is establishing herself as the best player in the area with her ability to beat you in so many ways and I don't see Hedgesville being able to stop her when she wants to score. Now saying this does not denigrate the Hedgesville players as if they are not any good at all. They are good just not as good as the best players on Martinsburg
Martinsburg did not know how to attack it??????
Were you at the game? Martinsburg hit 7 threes and scored 70 points. Slow them down and they still scored 70!! Robinson 31 points and Brewer 23 --attack that!
We will see next time!!!
You have to come to our house...The refs saved your boys team who are by the way,OVERRATED!!! Just like your girls are OVERRATED!!! I was just giving an honest opinion and you call me out ...well,fine!We will see. Your heads are too big,you are not that good, boys or girls. When Katy ,Grey ,and Brittany are all clicking we will see if your "BIG 3" are that much better than ours. We have played 5 teams better than Martinsburg. 5! Brewer is too slow,Hill can't defend,Robinson is outta control and Pinkett fouls too much as does Wright. You have zero bench!
GO EAGLES!!!
