E. Panhandle Outlook

How are the teams in the EP shaping up this year? Who are players to look out for and what are the teams as a whole going to do? Any predictions?

University Hawks

Does anyone know anything about the University team this year? I see they've lost two in a row. Are their injuries?

UNIVERSITY HAWKS

They look OK watched them play Parkersburg South not the team from years pass.

I think

I think to have continuity in the program your freshmen coach has to work with the varsity coach and prepare kids for the next levels by running what the varsity coach runs...otherwise those kids get way behind and it takes half of their soph year to learn the system. This hurts the chance of a kid that played on the freshmen the year before to compete with a freshmen kid that may have moved up to jv the previous year. The jv kid knows the system and the freshmen kid doesnt...its unfair.

Freshmen ball is a slight step above rec league...its slow and methodical. So why not teach the kids the varsity system?

I agree with you Big Apple.

I agree with you Big Apple. That is very unfair to the player and to the other kids on the team as well when the other players don't know the plays and have a hard time adjusting. I think having the kids play over the summer together can help as well. The only downside is based on the players the coaches have they may not be able to run the same things. They can be similar but they may have to tweak things. If you're very guard oriented or have a lot of big men with poor ball handling skills you may not be able to run the same thing. For the most part though thats not the case its simply the coaches not getting along or being able to agree.

Well to me it looks like

Well to me it looks like Martinsburg will probably be the top team but the other teams will have a better chance of closing the gap this year due to the loss of Iesha Robinson and Yolonda Pinkett.

Martinsburg: will need to work on ball movement and have their bigs develop a post presence and consistently box out for rebounds. They will need their guards to learn to penetrate to shoot or dish and to cut down on turnovers and poor decision making. They have a new point guard in Basey but she is only a freshman and therefore will take time to adjust to the pressure. She will also need to work on her outside shooting and be confident enough to drive past people. Brewer will need to learn to let the game come to her and not try to do too much offensively. She's the best player on the team but they will need to move the ball effectively on offense to help her get better looks. I think the key to Martinsburg is how their reserves play and if they can learn the system and develop quickly if they are to have any chance at states. The coaches will need to work on basic fundamentals with some of the team. Teams like North Marion, Morgantown, University and Huntington will be very hard to beat otherwise.

Hedgesville: They have a good shooter and post player in Leborious and experience in the backcourt with Brooks. They are not as big and the loss of Boarman will be tough to fill but if their guards can settle down and they can get Leborious enough open looks they can surprise people.

Musselman: I think they will probably be the second best team in the area. They have good guard play and although not very big they are very scrappy and have some quickness with the Henderson girls and can give teams trouble. Kali Miller will need to assert herself in the post.

Jefferson: They will struggle due to the losses of players due to graduation and not a lot of athleticism. They will play tough but I just don't see them being able to compete.

Washington: Still a very young team with no seniors on the roster. Hosby is very good but will struggle and get frustrated with a lack of support.
